NEW!  BMV 10 Day/20 Day Suspension Letters Information

E-Check Station Closings: In the event of extended power outages or extreme winter weather/snow storms, please check for possible station closings/updates.

As of January 1, 2020, the Ohio E-Check program began conducting vehicle testing exclusively through the use of the OBD II test and the tailpipe method of testing was discontinued. The OBD II testing method allows for a more efficient and less costly testing program and requires less time for the motorist.

Ohio's vehicle test program requires emission testing for vehicles from 4 through 25 years old. The tailpipe emission test was necessary because only vehicles manufactured in 1996 and later were required to be equipped with a standardized OBD system for emissions testing purposes. In 2022, the vehicles from model year 1998 through 2018 will be tested. Because vehicles manufactured prior to 1996 are no longer subject to emission testing, tailpipe testing is no longer needed, and was discontinued on January 1, 2020.
