Helping communities and businesses access compliance, technical and financial assistance for their environmental needs.

Denison University is a liberal arts college founded in 1831 located in Granville, Ohio, with 2,250 students and 226 professors. Denison received an Encouraging Environmental Excellence (E3) Gold Award from Ohio EPA in August 2016. Since 2008, Denison University has included sustainability as one of its goals and promotes a multi-disciplinary approach to sustainability that balances environmental, economic and social responsibility. Their environmental stewardship efforts are strongly supported by the Office of the President, which, in 2008, created a Campus Sustainability Coordinator and Committee that provides guidance to the University.

Environmental stewardship activities include:

  • Using an energy management dashboard to track energy and water use by campus buildings.
  • Tracking greenhouse gas emissions using the Clean Air Cool Planet Greenhouse Gas calculator.
  • Installing solar arrays on campus.
  • Requiring new buildings to have environmental benefits equivalent to the LEED silver standards.
  • Implementing sensor-controlled heating and cooling and energy efficient lighting.
  • Improving storm water management.
  • Launching a revolving loan fund for new energy efficiency and environmental stewardship projects.
  • Implementing a composting program with their food service provider.
  • Reducing solid waste sent to the landfill and increasing recycling rates.
  • Developing a Green Leaves office program where offices receive a score and recognition for their environmentally beneficial practices.

Ohio EPA’s E3 program provides four recognition levels: Achievement, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The Gold Level recognizes organizations that have a good environmental compliance record, have completed environmental stewardship activities and are committed to pursuing environmental improvement projects. Any organization in Ohio may apply for membership. Applications are accepted annually and include both written and on-site evaluations. Applicants must follow environmental laws and regulations.
