Ohio EPA Schedules Meeting to Discuss Wastewater Discharge Permit for Titanium Dioxide Production Facility in Ashtabula

An Ashtabula company’s request to increase the amount of treated wastewater it discharges to Lake Erie will be the focus of an Aug. 23, 2012, Ohio EPA public meeting. The information session and public hearing will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Ashtabula Township Hall (C.D. Ray Community Room), 2718 N. Ridge Road East, Ashtabula.

Ohio EPA is reviewing an application submitted by Millennium Inorganic Chemicals Inc. for its production plants located at 2426 Middle Road. Millennium is planning to increase titanium dioxide production by 20-25 percent and is seeking approval to increase the amount of treated wastewater it discharges to Lake Erie. The company also is requesting Ohio EPA consolidate the two existing discharge permits into a single permit renewal.

If approved, the increased discharge may result in a change from the current water quality conditions of Lake Erie, but cannot violate Ohio’s water quality standards that protect human health and the environment. Ohio EPA will consider the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects of the project before deciding on the increase and permit renewal.

Comments on the application may be presented at the meeting or submitted in writing to: Ohio EPA, Division of Surface Water, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049 or The public comment period ends Aug. 30, 2012.

The application and related materials are available for review at Ohio EPA’s Northeast District Office in Twinsburg by calling (330) 963-1200.
