Ohio EPA Offers Public Hearing on Draft Air Permit for Rumpke Waste Inc.'s Brown County Landfill

Ohio EPA will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, to accept comments on a draft air permit for Rumpke Waste Inc.’s Brown County Landfill. The landfill is located at 9427 Beyers Road, Georgetown.

The information session will begin at 6:30 p.m. immediately followed by a hearing at the Southern Hills Career & Technical Center, 9193 Hamer Road, Georgetown. During the hearing, the public can submit comments for the record regarding the draft permit-to-install.

The permit modification allows an increase in air flow to the facility’s main open flare to help reduce odors. Flares are used for gas control. Gas control is necessary at landfills to burn off methane, an explosive gas, which is produced when landfill contents decompose. If not controlled, the methane can migrate off-site and endanger residents on adjoining properties. The flare system controls off-site migration by collecting and burning off the methane.

In addition to comments received during the public hearing, Ohio EPA will accept written comments through Sept. 14. Comments received after this date will not be considered as part of the official record. Written comments may be submitted at the hearing or sent to: Cindy Charles, Portsmouth Local Air Agency, 605 Washington Street, Third Floor, Portsmouth, Ohio, 45662.

Copies of the draft permit application and technical support information may be reviewed and/or copied by first calling to make an appointment at the Portsmouth Local Air Agency, located at the above address, (740) 353-5156.
