Ohio EPA Holding Public Hearing to Discuss Permit for Fulton County Steel Mill Expansion

Ohio EPA is accepting public comments at a Sept. 18, 2019, public meeting on a draft air emissions permit for an expansion of the North Star BlueScope Steel mill located in Delta.

The public information session and hearing begins at 6 p.m. at Memorial Hall, 401 Main Street, Delta. A hearing will immediately follow during which the public can submit comments for the record concerning the draft permit.

If Ohio EPA approves the permit, it would allow for an expansion of current steel mill operations resulting in an approximately 47 percent increase in rolled steel production at the facility. North Star BlueScope Steel produces flat rolled steel coils principally for the building and construction industry.

If approved, the permit would establish emission limits for particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, lead, and greenhouse gases. If the permit is approved, the total maximum air emissions would be limited to protect public health and the environment.

Written comments are considered the same as oral testimony presented at the hearing. Written comments must be received by the close of business on Sept. 23, 2019. Comments can be mailed to Julie Budge, Ohio EPA Northwest District Office, 347 North Dunbridge Road, Bowling Green, OH 43402, or emailed to julie.budge@epa.ohio.gov

Interested parties may access the draft permit online.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
