Ohio EPA Holding Hearing June 29 about General Permit for Bridge Maintenance

Ohio EPA will accept public comments at a virtual public hearing about renewing a general permit allowing wastewater discharges from specific bridge maintenance activities. The discharges are associated with cleaning of bridge joints, scuppers and drainage troughs, and bridge seats.

A virtual public hearing about the draft permit renewal will be held at 2:30 p.m. on June 29, 2021. During the hearing, the public may submit written comments on the record about the project. Citizens who want to participate must register in advance of the meeting.

The permit allows only clean water to be used for bridge cleaning. Discharges containing detergents or other cleaning agents are not permitted. Discharges to waters of the state must be minimized. More stringent requirements are included for discharges to high quality water resources.

A fact sheet and other information about the draft bridge maintenance general permit renewal are available online. The permits are effective for five years.

In addition to the online public hearing, written comments may be submitted by email to epa.dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov, or by mail to Ohio EPA Division of Surface Water, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, OH 43216-1049 by July 6, 2021. All comments should include the permit number “OHZ000002” in the email subject line.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
