Ohio EPA Considering Discharge Permit for Waterville Quarry

Ohio EPA will host a public information session and hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, about a request from Hanson Aggregates Midwest to renew the wastewater discharge permit for its Waterville Quarry. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Waterville Public Library, Meeting Room A, 800 Michigan Avenue.

At the meeting, Ohio EPA will present information, answer questions and accept public comments on the proposed permit renewal. The permit sets limits on the wastewater discharged during quarry operations.

The discharge would result in a lowering of the water quality of the Maumee River. However, the discharge cannot exceed chemical-specific water quality standards that protect wildlife, aquatic life and human health. Ohio EPA is required to consider technical, economic, social and environmental aspects of the proposed project. Ohio EPA also will consider alternatives with lesser or no impacts to water quality.

The quarry is located at 600 South River Road, Waterville. It discharges to an unnamed tributary of the Maumee River.
Ohio EPA will accept written comments on the permit application through March 6, 2012. Anyone may submit comments or request to be on the mailing list for information. To comment or receive information on the application, write to: Division of Surface Water, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049. The application and other related materials are available for review at Ohio EPA’s Northwest District Office in Bowling Green by calling (419) 352-8461.
