Ohio EPA Awards $45,378 Environmental Education Grant to Champaign County Organization
Ohio EPA has awarded $45,378 to Urbana University – College of Arts and Sciences, for its collaborative outreach to increase public awareness of environmental issues in Champaign County. Seven grants were awarded statewide for $237,091.
The grant will be used to fund a variety of programs about local water quality issues and sustainable resource use for the residents of Champaign County. Interpretive signs will guide visitors through six demonstration ecosystems, a rain garden for storm water retention, and energy efficiency features of buildings on the campus. Hands-on family activities from Project WET, Project Learning Tree and the Healthy Water, Healthy People program will introduce at least 485 families (1,500 people) the first year to the connections between local ecosystems, water quality and human health. A mobile lab will bring these activities to events sponsored by collaborating partners including the Champaign County Library, Champaign Family YMCA, Girl Scouts, Johnny Appleseed Museum and Urbana University Library.
The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is administered by Ohio EPA. Eligible grant recipients include environmental groups, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional organizations, businesses and state and local governments.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. In the past 40 years, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling. Ohio EPA….40 years and moving forward.
