October 20, 2016 Ohio EPA Awards $800 Environmental Education Grant to Hardin County Organization
Blanchard River Watershed Partnership will take a “snapshot” sample of the Blanchard River Watershed using funding from an Ohio EPA grant to Ohio Northern. The $800 Ohio Environmental Education Fund grant will support water chemistry sampling at several locations in the watershed and produce a “grade card” brochure to be distributed to the public.

First Congregational Church of Akron, will receive a $5,000 Ohio EPA environmental education grant to expand its current rainwater collection system and educate the public about how diverted water is used in the church’s produce garden.

Ohio EPA Director Craig W. Butler and State Medical Director Mary DiOrio (Ohio Department of Health) were in Urbana (Champaign County) to announce funding for community health departments and related public entities across the state to help mitigate the spread of mosquito-borne viruses such as Zika, West Nile and La Cross Encephalitis.

Ohio EPA invites owners of heavy duty diesel vehicle fleets in eligible Ohio counties to apply for Diesel Emission Reduction Grants (DERG) to help reduce emissions. Projects funded by the grants will help improve air quality through vehicle replacement, repowering engines, retrofitting emission controls or installing anti-idle equipment.

Miami University’s Hefner Museum of Natural History will train 32 early childhood education majors as environmental educators, stressing content knowledge and effective training. Participants will become Certified Early Childhood Environmental Educators and will receive a kit of materials and resources to use in their classrooms.
June 6, 2016 Meigs County Organization Receives Help from Ohio EPA to Improve the Environment
United Plant Savers will add interpretive signage and an exhibit to tell the story of resource extraction and habitat restoration at the Goldenseal Sanctuary in Rutland. As visitors walk around the trail, they will have the opportunity to learn about the restoration project. The exhibit will show what the land looked like in the 1960s and show pictures of various stages of restoration.

Case Western Reserve University – Leonard Gelfand STEM Center will hold professional development workshops for teachers in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to help educate students about important issues facing Lake Erie. Teachers will participate in a week-long workshop to develop programs they can implement with their students at the newly established Kelley’s Island Field Station and the Cleveland Metroparks’ Stewardship Center at West Creek.

Converting hardscapes to pervious pavement helps improve the water quality in runoff. The Cuyahoga River Community Planning dba Cuyahoga River Restoration, will be training municipalities, watershed organizations, community development corporations and the general public how to plan and execute these conversions.
