Ohio EPA has awarded Huron one of the first grants to purchase testing equipment to monitor the city’s drinking water supply for cyanobacteria. Ohio EPA Director Craig W. Butler was in Huron today to award the grant and discuss how the state and communities are cooperating to protect local water supplies.
October 14, 2014 Ohio EPA Seeks Public’s Help to Nab Nature Preserve Dumper
Eleven containers containing paint, sealer and oil wastes were dumped beside Irwin Prairie State Nature Preserve in Lucas County in late September. Ohio EPA is seeking assistance from anyone who may have seen activity at the dump site or know the person or people who dumped the material.

Dr. R. Peter Richards and the city of Lorain are the recipients of the 2014 Ohio Lake Erie Awards presented by the Ohio Lake Erie Commission (OLEC). OLEC honors one person and one organization each year that have worked to protect and restore Lake Erie and its watershed. Since 1995, 19 individuals and organizations have been recognized for their stewardship.
October 7, 2014 Four Photographs Chosen as Overall Judges’ Favorites In 2014 ‘Life on Lake Erie’ Photo Contest
Four diverse photographs won the judges’ compliments as the overall favorites in the 2014 Life on Lake Erie photo contest. Each photographer was recognized, along with seven other winning photos, by the members of the Ohio Lake Erie Commission at their Sept. 25 meeting at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Oak Harbor. This year’s photo contest winners are from all along the Lake Erie shoreline from Toledo to Conneaut and as far south as Vandalia. The winning photos can be found on OLEC’s website, www.lakeerie.ohio.gov.

August 4, 2014 Kasich Administration Supports City of Toledo Decision to Lift Water Advisory
Following Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins’ decision this morning to lift the drinking water advisory which the city originally issued early Saturday morning, Gov. John R. Kasich and Ohio EPA Director Craig W. Butler stated support for the decision. Ohio EPA officials worked with city officials this morning to analyze the results of tests the city ran overnight and agreed with the city’s conclusion that Toledo’s water is safe to drink.

A $48,405 Environmental Education Fund grant from Ohio EPA will allow Defiance Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) promote green infrastructure as a cost-effective method to reduce nutrient loadings and storm water runoff volume to streams. Ohio EPA awarded 11 environmental education grants statewide for $304,136.
