Northwest Ohio Communities and Businesses Receive Recycling and Litter Prevention Grants from Ohio EPA 

Ohio EPA is awarding $1.15 million in grant funding in northwest Ohio for 10 projects in eight counties to support litter prevention and recycling efforts across the region. In northwest Ohio, the following recipients are receiving grants.

Litter Management Grants – Litter management grants this year for the northwest Ohio region total $123,680:

· Henry County Solid Waste District

· Mercer County Solid Waste Management District

$ 3,984

· Wyandot County Solid Waste Management District

Statewide, Ohio EPA is awarding $330,000 in grant funding to 27 local government entities to support litter cleanup and tire amnesty programs.

Community Development Grants – Ohio EPA awarded a Recycling and Litter Prevention Community Grant that includes multiple facilities, one in northwest Ohio:

  • Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is receiving $161,150 to purchase four food waste pulpers for food scrap recycling in four prisons (including one for Lucas County Correctional Facility in Toledo).

Statewide, Ohio EPA is awarding $1.5 million in grant funding to assist local governments in strengthening local recycling and litter prevention efforts.

Market Development Grants – Ohio EPA’s Market Development Grant total in northwest Ohio is $513,374. Three projects received funding:

  • American Paint Recyclers (sponsored by Van Wert County Solid Waste District) is receiving $22,815 to purchase a forklift and a filtration system;
  • Dlubak Glass Ohio (city of Upper Sandusky) is receiving $250,000 to purchase a KICE glass processing unit; and
  • Barnes Nursery Inc. (Erie County Waste District) is receiving $240,559 to purchase Trommel screen and conveyor for the composting business. 

Statewide, Ohio EPA is awarding $1.66 million to eight market development grant projects.

Scrap Tire Grants – One project is being funded in northwest Ohio:

  • Crawford County Solid Waste District is sponsoring Willig Tire Recycling LLC to purchase primary and secondary tire shredders with a grant award of $350,000.

Statewide, Ohio EPA is awarding $1 million for Scrap Tire grants to four projects. 

Ohio EPA Recycling and Litter Prevention Office grants this year total $5 million. Funding comes in part from a 75 cents per ton charge on construction and demolition debris waste, and part of a 50 cents per wholesale purchase of new tires. All Ohioans are encouraged to reduce waste, recycle materials and buy recycled content products to make recycling in Ohio even more successful.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
