Ohio EPA Meeting about Sandusky Dock Discharge Permit

Ohio EPA will host a public meeting on Thursday, May 24, 2018, about a proposed wastewater discharge permit for the Sandusky Dock Corp.

The meeting will be held at Sandusky City Commission’s first floor meeting room, 222 Meigs St., Sandusky. An information session begins at 6 p.m. with a hearing immediately following during which the public can submit comments on the record about the proposed permit.

Sandusky Dock Corp. has applied for a permit to discharge wastewater from the company’s 2705 West Monroe Street coal loading and unloading dock. If a permit is approved, it would require the company to monitor the discharge of an average of 144,000 gallons per day of treated storm water and process wastewater.

The proposed permit would not allow violations of Ohio’s water quality standards that protect human health and the environment. Ohio EPA will consider technical, economic, social and environmental aspects of the proposed permit before deciding whether to issue or deny the permit. The facility discharges to Mills Creek, a Lake Erie tributary.

Ohio EPA will accept written comments on the permit application through May 31, 2018. Anyone may submit comments or request to be on the mailing list for information. To comment or receive information on the permit application, write to: Ohio EPA-DSW, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049 or email epa.dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
