Ohio EPA Issues Permit for Toledo Iron Briquette Manufacturer

Ohio EPA issued a final air emissions permit-to-install today for IronUnits, a proposed iron briquette manufacturing facility in Toledo. The permit allows the company to build the plant at the former Ironville Terminal on Front Street and Millard Avenue in East Toledo.

Ohio EPA permits include conditions limiting total maximum air emissions to protect public health and the environment. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and greenhouse gas pollutants are expected to be emitted along with small quantities of other pollutants. The plant will produce 2.48 million tons of hot briquetted iron per year.

Ohio EPA and Toledo Division of Environmental Services held a public meeting about the project on Jan. 18. Public comments received at the meeting and during the public comment period were reviewed and considered before a final decision was made. These comments are addressed in a Response to Comments document. The final permit and the Response to Comments document are available on Ohio EPA’s website.

Issuance of final permits can be appealed to the Ohio Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC). Appeals generally must be filed within 30 days of issuing a final action; therefore, anyone considering filing an appeal should contact ERAC at (614) 466-8950 for more information.

Permits from Ohio EPA’s Division of Surface Water also are needed before the company can begin physical construction of the facility.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
